The social scientists that investigate hunter-gatherer cultures are either anthropologists, archaeologists, or both.
The goal of anthropology is to study various elements of human culture, usually that occurred in pre-history (before written record). Archaeologists, on the other hand, study the extant physical remains in order to get a clearer picture of how these societies may have operated. Anthropology and archaeology work in tandem with each other, as two fields doing separate parts of the same research. Whereas an anthropologist would look at values, traditions, and norms, an archaeologist would study the material remnants left from that same culture.
