Starch can be easily hydrolyzed, or broken down into its glucose building blocks. Cellulose is indigestible because we lack the digestive machinery to break the bonds between the monosaccharides of cellulose and release the energy-rich glucose.

Answer:

Cellulose is a carbohydrate, thus, if we eat it, we should get energy. But that doesn't happen, why??

The reason lies behind the fact that the human body lacks the enzyme required for digesting cellulose. Thus, even if we eat cellulose, we don't any energy. This is because, isn't even digested in our body!

The enzyme required for digesting the cellulose is caecum, found in the digestive system of the herbivores, which is why they're able to eat grass and we humans aren't able to do so!
