It is true sharecroppers of Champaran secured a great victory for themselves although they received only one-fourth of the compensation. Their victory was not monetary; it was much more than that. They succeeded in bending the obdurate and adamant British landlords. First time in the history of their stay in India, they had been forced to obey the law and this was their first defeat. This defeat filled the Indian sharecroppers with new confidence and they became fearless. This was the beginning of India’s liberation.

However the Champaran struggle brought the peasants only one-fourth of their total compensation the struggle was still considered as a huge success.

That was because the struggle brought the land lords to surrender their money along with their prestige. The struggle brought the stalemate between the peasants and landlords. As a result of the struggle, the peasants across the region became aware of their rights and became courageous than before.
