Though 'the small society of Rameswaram was very rigid in terms of segregation of different social groups', there was a sense of communal co-existence. Justify the statement in reference to Kalam's experience with the new teacher who had come to teach in their school in grade V. (for three marks please)

Answer:

Althogh the people belonging to diff. castes can be easily segregated due to their clothing, the evil practice of inequality and discrimination was non-existent. Kalam's new teacher cound not tolerate sitting of a Muslim beside a Hindu(they were easily distinguishable bcoz of cap and thread). So, she asked Kalam to go and sit at the back in the class. Both of them felt miserable about the incident and recounted the events to their respective parents. Although Pakshi Laxman Sastry was the high priest of Rameswaram temple, he instantly rounded the teacher and confronted him/her. The rebuke of Pakshi Laxman Sastry made not only the teacher apologise but also reformed him/her. This shows that there was no place for caste segregation in Rameswaram and was even confronted. It was a very communal society where there was no place for discrimination and people lived with each other in peace.
