1. An electric field is an elegant way of characterizing the electrical environment of a system of charges. The electric field at any point in space around a system of charges represents the force a unit positive test charge would experience if placed at that point.

2.Potential energy is a scalar quantity, so a potential energy field is a scalar field. It has a magnitude everywhere in space, but does not have direction.
