Some common characteristics of commercial agriculture are:-
1. It is mainly practised in the grassy temperate grasslands like the Prairies in N. America, Steppes of Russia and the Pampas of Argentina.

2. The cultivated plots of land are extensive and huge. Individual farmers own very large plots of land - about 1000-2000 acres - and settle down in comfortable houses within the farm with modern amenities.

3. As labour available is less, large scale use of machinery is made. In every farm, operations from planting to harvesting, are performed with sophisticated machinery. The flat land is suitable for using combines, and modern inputs such as irrigation, chemical fertilisers and pesticides are used to produce large surplus.

4. In commercial agriculture, a single crop is cultivated mainly for the purpose of trade in markets and its basic idea to make profit. That's why it is called Commercial agriculture. The huge surplus production requires good storage facilities and transport to send the crops to the market.

Wheat and maize are the main crops grown for commercial trade.
