Three pieces of strings, of lengths, 180 cm, 216 cm and 90 cm are to be cut into equal lengths. What is the greatest possible length of each piece?

Answer:
Let the length of middle piece = x
Then length of longest piece = 3x
Then length of shortest piece = 3x−46
Thus, x+3x+3x−46=80
⇒7x=126
⇒x=18
Hence, shortest piece = 18×3−46=54−46=8 cm
