Three presidencies were established by the British with a Governor General for each, the three presidencies are - Madras, Bombay and Calcutta ( Option b is the correct answer)

  • One of the many key players who contributed significantly to the growth of Company power was Warren Hastings, who served as Governor-General from 1773 to 1885.
  • By the time of his reign, the Company was influential not only in Bengal but also in Bombay and Madras.
  • Presidencies, or wide divisions of British colonies, served as administrative subdivisions. Bengal, Madras, and Bombay each had a presidency.
  • A governor oversaw each of them. The Governor-General served as the highest ranking official in the government. The first governor general, Warren Hastings, brought about a number of administrative changes, particularly in the area of justice.
  • A new judicial system was implemented beginning in 1772. There were supposed to be two courts in each district: a criminal court (faujdari adalat) and a civil court (diwani adalat).

Hence, the three presidencies are - Madras, Bombay and Calcutta.
