Three resistors are in parallel circuit. Resistor 1 measures 5 ohms, the second resistor has 6 ohms and a 3A current flows in it. If the total current is 11.5 A, determine (a) the reading on ammeter and (b) the value of the third resistor.

Answer:

I2= 2.5 ohms -> reading on the ammeter

Value of the resistor(R3) -> 2.5 ohms

Explanation:

Given:

R1 = 5 ohms

R2 = 6 ohms

R3 = ?

Current 1 (I1) = 3 A

Total current (IS) = 11.5 A

a) V = I1R1

= 3 x 5

= 15 V

The voltage is same in parallel

V = I2R2

I2 = V/R2

= 15/6

= 2.5 A

Calculating the current in third resistance

IS = I1 + I2 + I3

11.5 = 3 + 2.5 + I3

11.5 - 5.5 = I3

I3 = 6 A

b) Value of the third resistor

R3 = V/I

= 15/6

= 2.5 A
