(i) In the direction of consumer protection, the Indian government has taken major steps in 1986 and enacted the consumer protection act,1986 which is popularly known as COPRA. Under COPRA a three tier judicial machinery at the district,state and national level was set up for redressal of consumer disputes
(ii) The jurisdiction of district level court of quasi judicial machinery for redressal of consumer disputes in India is to deal with the cases involving claims up to 20 lakhs
(iii) The state level court s deals with the cases involving claims between Rs 20 lakhs and Rs 1 crore
(iv) The national level court deals with the cases involving claims exceeding Rs 1 crore
(v) If a case is dismissed in district level court, the consumer can also appeal in state and then in national level court.
