Define x:

Let the number be x

Form equation:

Thrice a number diminished by 12 is equal to the number increased by 8

3x - 12 = x + 8

Solve x:

3x - 12 = x + 8

Take away x from both sides:

3x -x - 12 = 8

2x - 12 = 8

Add 12 to both sides:

2x = 8 + 12

2x = 20

Divide both sides by 2:

x = 20 ÷ 2

x = 10

Answer: The number is 10
