Global Poverty Scenario

proportion of people in developing countriesliving in extreme economic poverty- defined bythe World Bank as living on less than $1 per day-has fallen from 28 per cent in 1990 to 21 per centin 2001. Although there has been a substantialreduction in global poverty, it is marked withgreat regional differences. Poverty declined substantially in China and Southeast Asian

countries as a result of rapid economic growthand massive investments in human resourcedevelopment. In Sub-Saharan Africa, poverty infact rose from 41 per cent in 1981 to 46 percentin 2001 (see graph 3.3). In Latin America, theratio of poverty remained the same.
