Suppose Tim's age = x

Tom's age = 5 + x

Sum of their ages = 23

(5+x)+ x = 23

5 + 2x = 23

2x = 23 - 5

2x =18

x = 9

Given,

Tim and Tom are two brothers

The sum of their ages is 23

Tim is 5 years younger than Tom

To find,

Age of Tom in three years

Solution,

Let the age of Tim is x

Then, the age of Tom will be x+5

The total of the ages of Tim and Tom = 23

x + (x+5)=23

2x + 5 = 23

2x = 23-5

2x = 18

x = 18/2

x = 9

So, the age of Tim is 9 years

And the age of Tom = (9+5) years

The age of Tom = 14 years

The age of Tom in three years = 14 years + 3 years

The age of Tom = 17 years

Hence, the age of Tom in three years is 17 years.
