Length of diagonal of the rectangle=

√( length) ²+( breadth) ²

=√(20) ²+(12) ²

=√400+144

√544 m

. '. Length of fence= √544 m

Perimeter of the triangle formed by the diagonal of the rectangle =(12+20+√544)

=(32+√544) m

Given:

(i) Tim has a rectangular garden measuring 12m by 20m

(ii) He wants to split it diagonally from the corner with the help of a fence.

To find:

(i) The length of the fence.

Solution:

When the fence is used to split the rectangular garden from the corners, the fence will form the hypotenuse and the length and breadth of the garden would be the two sides of the right angled triangle so formed.

So, let the length of the fence be x.

x²  = (l² + b²)         [By Pythogoras Theorem]

Length, l = 20m, breadth, b = 12m.

So,

x = ±√(20² + 12²)

=  ±√544

= 23.32                       [Length cant be negative]

So, the length of the fence is 23.32 m
