ANSWER:

Tissue that transports food in plants is PHLOEM

PHLOEM:

  • Phloem is a food conducting tissue.

  • The components of phloem helps in the transport of food and nutrients across the cells of plant

  • The transport of food in phloem is multidirectional.

  • The early formed phloem is called proto phloem and the one which is formed later is called meta phloem.

  • There are four components of phloem namely, sieve elements , companion cells, phloem parenchyma and phloem fibres.

SIEVE ELEMENTS:

  • In angiosperms, sieve elements consist of sieve tubes and sieve plates.

  • In pteridophytes and gymnosperms , there are present in simple forms like sieve cells.

  • They are major food conducting tissue in phloem.

  • Sieve elements do not nucleus of its own at maturity.

COMPANION CELLS:

  • As the name describes, they accompany the sieve tube elements.

  • Companion cells share their nucleus with sieve elements.

  • So the companion cells and sieve elements are called sister cells

PHLOEM PARENCHYMA:

  • They are living component of phloem.

  • They stores starch , oil ,tannins, etc.

  • Phloem parenchyma is absent in monocots.

PHLOEM FIBRES:

  • These are also called bast fibres.

  • These are the only dead tissue in phloem.

  • They have central narrow lumen.

  • Phloem fibres are absent in proto phloem.
