ANSWER:
Tissue that transports food in plants is PHLOEM
PHLOEM:
- Phloem is a food conducting tissue.
- The components of phloem helps in the transport of food and nutrients across the cells of plant
- The transport of food in phloem is multidirectional.
- The early formed phloem is called proto phloem and the one which is formed later is called meta phloem.
- There are four components of phloem namely, sieve elements , companion cells, phloem parenchyma and phloem fibres.
SIEVE ELEMENTS:
- In angiosperms, sieve elements consist of sieve tubes and sieve plates.
- In pteridophytes and gymnosperms , there are present in simple forms like sieve cells.
- They are major food conducting tissue in phloem.
- Sieve elements do not nucleus of its own at maturity.
COMPANION CELLS:
- As the name describes, they accompany the sieve tube elements.
- Companion cells share their nucleus with sieve elements.
- So the companion cells and sieve elements are called sister cells
PHLOEM PARENCHYMA:
- They are living component of phloem.
- They stores starch , oil ,tannins, etc.
- Phloem parenchyma is absent in monocots.
PHLOEM FIBRES:
- These are also called bast fibres.
- These are the only dead tissue in phloem.
- They have central narrow lumen.
- Phloem fibres are absent in proto phloem.
