In living cells, water enters the membrane through osmosis. the cell membrane is a semi-permeable membrane that allows water and certain solute molecules and ions to pass through it. water crosses the cell depending on the concentration of the cell. If the cell is more concentrated than the surrounding cells (hypotonic), it then causes the water from the surrounding cell to enter through it .But if the cell is less concentrated than the surrounding cell,( hypertonic) it causes the water from the cell to go the surrounding cell.
