Given:

Line segment: $\overline{AB}$

To find:

To find the amount to open the compass to draw the perpendicular bisector of line  $\overline{AB}$

Solution:

Let the length of line segment of $\overline{AB}$ is 5 cm.

To draw the perpendicular bisector, follow the below steps.

  1. Measure a length of more than half of the length of $\overline{AB}$. (For example: open compass by 3 cm. 3 cm is more than half of the length of $\overline{AB}$).
  2. Put one leg of compass on A and draw arcs on both sides of line.
  3. And repeat the above step by keeping the leg of compass on B.
  4. Now, join the intersection points of the arcs.
  5. The line obtained after joining is known as perpendicular bisector.

Therefore, we should open the compass by more than half length of the line segment.
