I think u should understand by an example..let me give u an example..Since the wire is bend in the form of a square and we know that the sides of square are equal so each side will have same resistance i.e. 5 ohms.Now if we make a diagonal so the two faces in each side of a diagonal will have two sides and the resistance will be 10 ohms

So the total effective resistance will be

1 / R = 2 / 10 = 1 / 5

R = 5 ohms
