Chloride, iodide and bromide ions are known as halide ions.
To test for this ions we use Lead (II) Acetate or Silver Nitrate.
In our case we will use Silver Nitrate.
We will first add dilute nitric acid the Silver Nitrate into the given solutions of the ions.
When we do this, we expect the following.
1) If Chloride ions are present, we will observe a white precipitate.
2) If Bromide ions are present a light yellow precipitate will be observed.
3) If Iodide ions are present a yellow precipitate will be observed.
This is how we test for halide ions.
