They have, however, looked within and found an ‘English’ problem. Assessments by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan — the New Delhibased headquarters of the schools — have indicated that the one significant area where private schools are able to beat them is communication skills and command over the English language.

Determined to jump over this hurdle, the KVs have decided to work from the root up and train the teachers in spoken English first to get to the students. It has just begun training the first set of teachers and Principals in spoken English and this pilot project is underway right at the PM’s constituency — Varanasi.

About 1500 KV teachers in Varanasi region — including over 400 primary and trained graduate teachers each, 200 plus post graduate teachers and 450 of the school administration including principals, vice- principals, senior teachers and office staff — are currently being trained in the Queen’s language through workshops, interactive sessions and special study material. The pilot project initiated in Varanasi started in January this year and will be completed by May 2016.

“We are quite clear that our teachers are very well qualified and in fact very dedicated to work. However, we have observed through internal assessments that private schools sometimes have an edge over KVs in terms of better communication skills and personality development of children. We have decided to start with teachers in small batches to help them polish their communication skills as they are the role models of students.

Depending on how, this pilot project goes, we would like to scale this up to all schools,” a senior official associated with the pilot project being conducted for the KVS told ET.
