Given:

To raise the height of low land. 48m long and  31.5 m broad, to 6.5 dm

A ditch, 27 m long and 18.2 m broad was dug in a side plot

To find:

The depth of the  ditch

Solution:

The dimensions of the low land:

Length = 48 m

Breadth = 31.5 m

Height = 6.5 dm = \frac{6.5}{10} = 0.65 m

∴ The volume of the low land = l × b × h = 48 × 31.5 × 0.65 = 982.8 m³ ..... (i)

The dimensions of the ditch:

Length = 27 m

Breadth = 18.2 m

Let "d" be the depth of the ditch.

∴ The volume of the ditch = l × b × d = 27 × 18.2 × d = (491.4 × d) m³ ..... (ii)

Since the earth dug from the ditch is used to raise the low land to a height of 0.65 m, therefore, we get

[Volume of the low land] = [Volume of the ditch]

by substituting from (i) & (ii), we get

⇒ 982.8 m³ = (491.4 × d) m³

d = \frac{982.8}{491.4}

\bold{d = 2 \:m}

Thus, the depth of the ditch will be 2 m.
