We know that ammonium chloride changes directly from solid to gaseous state on heating. So, in order to separate a mixture containing a sublimable volatile component from a non-sublimable impurity (salt in this case), the sublimation process is used.

Because Ammonium Chloride (NH4Cl) is a sublimable substance i.e. it can be directly convereted in to gas fro solid with an increase in temperature.
