Let x₁=1,y₁=2 1/4 m = 9/4 m

x₂=x and y₂=31 1/2 m = 63/2 m

As number of shirts and amount of cloth are directly proportional,

x₁/x₂=y₁/y₂

⇒1/x=[(9/4)/(63/2)]

⇒1/x=1/14

⇒x=14

Therefore,14 shirts can be stitched from 31 1/2 m of cloth.
