The main reason for the garbage to smell bad is the presence of biodegradable substance which is degraded by the microbial flora present in the garbage. The rotten smelling garbage can is put forth to a process called as composting.

This set up is left as it for more than 20-25 days to undergo anaerobic decomposition.
