To win an election, A candidate needs 60% of the votes cast. if after 2/3 rd of the votes have been counted, a candidate has 5/6 th of the counted votes.

To find : what part of the remaining votes does he still need to win.

solution : let there are x votes

a candidate needs votes to win = 60% of x = 3x/5

no of counted votes = 2/3 rd of x = 2x/3 votes

now a candidate has 5/6 th of the counted votes

= 5/6 × 2x/3

= 5x/9 votes.

no of remaining votes to win the election = 3x/5 - 5x/9

= (3 × 9 - 5 × 5)x/45 = 2x/45

remaining uncounted votes = x - 3x/5 = 2x/5

so, required part = (2x/45)/(2x/5) = 1/9

Therefore 1/9 th part of the remaining votes he still needs to win.
