The Green Revolution of the sixties and the seventies helped India move from a state of periodic food shortages to a regular state of food surpluses. This was possible due to better water management in agriculture, introduction of high-yielding varieties of seeds, efficient crop rotation, use of chemical fertilisers, application of potent pesticides and so on.
With the introduction of the aforesaid measures, the country was able to reduce its food import bill. Consequently, today food imports constitute only 3% of India's total imports in value terms.
