After independence, there were several attempts that were made in order to achieve the self fulfillment where economy and society won't depend on imported food items. But it wasn't until late 1960s that these attempts were successful. Also, keeping in mind that Green Revolution is continuous process and is still in progress.
What is green revolution -
1. Continuous expansion of farming land/areas
2. Double cropping
3. Use of genetically improved seeds for larger production
Thus with the implementation of these techniques and their continued use, farmers were able to significantly increase the total food crop production which resulted in less and less need to import food from outside.

Green revolution consists of the techniques like irrigation, pesticides all the techniques which improve the crop varieties. This revolution increases production because of the improved technological advancement, because of the green revolution, there is replaced the use of the land.
The green revolution has its drawbacks as well when the pesticides are used they are then disposed of in the sea so they disturb the sea life, making the life of sea animals poisonous.
And with the increasing population, there is a need for more food and in order to fulfill that gap, advanced technological methods of for increasing food production are needed.
