This activity is to prove that air exerts pressure in all directions. Thus, when the air in this balloon is given a way to come out, the air comes out from the way it finds. and as the balloon is attached with the straw the straw too moves with the balloon. The direction in which the balloon moves is the direction of force applied.

This activity is one of those activities which was performed by Newton in the year 1700. In this activity, he was trying to prove something regarding Force exerted by gas on their sorroundings, this activity proved that gases affects its sorroundings in all direction. You can see that the air is packed tightly in the balloon and is inside it but when we gave air a way out of balloon, it rushed that side and as suggested in the activity, the balloon is fixed with the straw, the straw will also move with the balloon. The force by air is applied in the direction of the hole in the balloon. And the straw will also move in that opposite direction of the hole. The movement of straw determines the direction of force applied.
