Answer:

213 pages

Step-by-step explanation:

We want to find the number of pages in the book.

Tony read 3/8 on the first day

He read 2/5 on the second day

First we find the portion of the book he read in the two days by adding-

We need to find the LCM of 8 and 5 because for addition we need the denominators to be same. LCM of 8 and 5 is 40. (LCM is Least Common Multiple)

We multiply the numerator and denominator of the first number by 5. We get 15/40.

We multiply the numerator and denominator of the second number by 8. We get 16/40.

Now we add the two numbers by adding the numerators and the denominator will remain unchanged. We get (15+16)/40

=31/40.

Now the remaining portion of the book is 40/40-31/40

= 9/40

We also know that the remaining number of pages is 48.

Let the total number of pages be x.

So, equation-

=> 9/40x = 48

=> 9x = 48*40

=> 9x = 1920

=> x = 1920/9

=> x = 213.33

We round 213.33 to 213 pages and we have the answer.

Hope this helped!
