When the ph on our mouths become less that 5.5 tooth decay starts. The acids produced By microbes by decomposing the food dissolves the enamel. Toothpaste is basic in nature so it neutralizes the effect of the acid.

Answer:

Bacteria present in the mouth produce acids by degradation of

sugar and food particles remaining in the mouth after eating. Using toothpastes, which

are generally basic, for cleaning the teeth can neutralize the excess acid and prevent

tooth decay.
