Cyber Crime

Cyber crime can be described as the attack on computer networks or the use of computers to facilitate crime.

Introduction

Cyber crime has a long history. The first true  hackers were MIT students who  in the 1960s found ingenious techniques of writing code and finding vulnerabilities in code and exploiting these vulnerabilities.

Hacking is a term that describes techniques and methods used to make something faster, easier or more efficient. Phreakers or phone hackers had found vulnerabilities in phone systems and they manipulated these systems to make long distance calls.

These phreakers later found ways of  exploiting computer systems. The phreakers were later known as hackers.

Government, corporate and university systems were often compromised by these hackers for bragging right among their peers.

While many hackers are just curious how a system works, how to make it faster or more efficient other hackers attack computer systems for personal gain or malicious intent.

Crimes Against People  

These crimes are crimes committed against people include cyber bullying, stalking, distribution of child pornography, spoofing, identity theft, credit card fraud, human trafficking, and online libel.

2. Crimes Against Property  

Some online crimes occur against  computer infrastructure and intellectual property , such as a computer or server. These crimes include Denial of Service attacks, cyber-squatting, hacking, virus transmission, computer vandalism, copyright and patent infringement.

3. Crimes Against Government  

 Cybercrimes against the government include defacement of sites, phishing,hacking, cyber warfare, pirated software   and cyber terrorism,

Ways to ensure cyber security

There are several measures that individuals, companies and governments and other institutions can take to ensure cyber security.These include :

• Using latest and patched software
• Using strong passwords and non-disclosure of passwords
• Using encryption programs to protect sensitive files
• Locking file cabinets
• Using the latest antivirus and anti spyware programs
• Installing firewalls
• Installing Intrusion detection and prevention software
