The various steps of digestion of food from mouth till it gets absorbed by the cells of the body are stated below-

In the Oral Cavity:

  • After food is taken into the mouth, the food gets broken down into simpler particles by teeth grinding.
  • The amylase and lysozyme secreted by the Saliva help in hydrolyzing starch and prevent infection in the mouth while breaking down the food particles.
  • Through chewing these particles a bolus of food is formed that gets passed onto the stomach.

In the Stomach:

  • The mucosa lining of the stomach has gastric glands that secrete mucus, pepsinogen (gets converted into pepsin that helps break complex protein into peptones and proteoses), and HCl (maintains the acidic balance in the stomach).
  • Along with a few other gastric enzymes and gastric juices, the food gets further broken down and forms a semi-digested food called chyme.

In Small Intestine:

  • By the action of pancreatic juices, Bile, intestinal juices, and pancreatic lipase, the food chyme is broken down into even simpler particles that get absorbed in the organism's blood.
  • The nutrients get absorbed in the blood and work accordingly in different portions of the target cell.

In Large Intestine:

  • Further breakdown of the previously unabsorbed food particles occurs by the action of a few bacteria.
  • Absorption of fewer minerals, and high water content, by the cells, occurs here.
  • The rest of the undigested fecal matter mixes with the mucus and gets excreted from the body through the anus.

Hence, through a series of complex steps, the digestion of food occurs.
