Maggie was weak and frail. When she heard Mrs. Thompson's  angry tone she held on tightly to Joe as she was already in pain. She was well-aware of the fact that no one wanted to adopt her because of her illness, still she was liking the fatherly feeling and love which she received from Joe. She was scared that if these people won't keep her she would have to stay alone in the sick/poorhouse, where she didn't want to go.
