Answer:

What's your favorite part about autumn? Maybe it's eating pumpkin pie, dressing up for Halloween, or jumping in a big pile of leaves! For many, a big pile of crispy leaves is what autumn is all about.

It might seem like all trees go bare during this time, but only deciduous trees do. Deciduous trees are trees that shed their leaves once a year, usually during the season of autumn, when their leaves are mature, or fully grown. Deciduous trees in the northern hemisphere lose their leaves in preparation for cold weather during the season of winter. However, deciduous trees located in tropical forests lose their leaves at the beginning of the dry season.

Why Do Deciduous Trees Lose Their Leaves?

Now we know that deciduous trees lose their leaves, but why? These types of trees have wide leaves that can easily be damaged by the cold, winter weather or a dry season. Therefore, the tree sheds its leaves to protect itself.

Have you noticed that leaves change color before they fall? This is because the nutrients in the leaves are being moved from the leaves to the tree's roots. One of these nutrients is called chlorophyll, which gives leaves their green color. When all of the nutrients are finished being stored in the roots of the tree, the leaves change color and fall to the ground. This process of storing nutrients and shedding leaves is called abscission. The word 'abscission' comes from the Latin word for 'scissors,' so you can remember it like scissors cutting the leaves off of trees! The abscission process is very important for deciduous trees because when the cold winter or dry weather passes, the trees still have energy and nutrients so they can grow more leaves in the spring or during the wet season
