Explanation:

I was required to learn the entire periodic table in the first term of my degree, although at the time many of the superheavy elements were just denoted as Uns, Uup, etc., so presented less of a challenge than now that they have been officially named.

For me, the simplest way to do it was to break it down into blocks - start with the main group elements.

I found it easier to remember the main group elements as the first and second periods, and then to fill in the remainder as vertical groups. So, once I had Lithium in the second period, for example, I could fill in the rest of alkali metals (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr) as they have a chemical commonality. Likewise the alkaline earths, noble gases, halogens, chalcogens, pnictogens, etc. The advantage of this is that you will probably already be expected to know the many of the main group elements as groups anyway.

After that, learn the first row of the transition metals. We were looking at transition metal groups at the time, so I found it useful to learn the second and third row transition metals as groups, as I had for the main group elements. You may find it easier to remember the later rows as rows, but I feel that misses out on the similarity of elements in the same group.

Then, move on to the lanthanides and actinides - I just learnt those as rows; I found they had a musicality that just allowed them to be fairly easily remembered. Besides, these elements are so relatively similar to metals in their own row that there is no real benefit in in knowing that, Nd is in the same ‘group’ as U.

Finally, keep practicing and testing yourself at each stage - draw out a periodic table, fill in the elements you remember as you are able and you should find yourself able to fill in at least some of those you can’t remember immediately.

You find that, the more you use the periodic table, the less you see it as rows (or periods) to be filled in, and the more you just ‘know’ that Zirconium is next to Niobium or Thallium is next to Lead.
