In today's world, social media definitely is a key driver for word-of-mouth marketing. We are always attached to our smart devices and stay up to date with friends and the rest of the world through social media all the time. We are also exposed to various types of ads and influential articles on the Internet, especially social networking sites. People do not hesitate to share their views, frustrations, happiness - basically, their blunt review about a particular service or product online.
If a person is exposed to an advertisement on a social media platform and is happy with the service he receives, he will not hesitate sharing it with others. This is how the concept of 'viral campaigns' works. Trending topics on social media are usual topics to talk about when we start a conversation with someone, whether it is with family, or the office, or at a social gathering. If one person is interested in a particular topic, it keeps the ball rolling and gradually more and more people are interested in that particular topic.
Therefore, I believe social media is a major driver for word-of-mouth marketing because I believe that if you market on social media, you will automatically market anywhere.
