“The Bet” is a story of a bet that stakes a banker’s two million rubles against fifteen years of a young lawyer’s life. The lawyer agrees to go into voluntary captivity for fifteen years. For the fifteen years that he stays alone, the lawyer learns great deal of things. he reads voraciously and is seen playing music. As time progresses, we see him loafing and drinking wine, He also studies languages and philosophy. In the final year of his bet, his reading becomes eclectic. The banker is no longer rich and therefore, does not have any money to pay the lawyer when he will win the bet. He decides to kill him. When he reaches the lawyer's room, he finds a letter which says that the lawyer has let go of material pleasures and does not want any money.  He has also  stated that he despises everything in human life, even the books from which he has learned about it. The lawyer decides to renounce the reward of the bet. The lawyer's action shows that true happiness lies neither in material possessions nor in knowledge nor in learning.
