Samuel was a school going boy who was studying in the VII standard. He was loved by everyone in his colony because he always spoke the truth. As a result, people always went to him whenever they wanted to know something. One day, he forgot to do his Mathematics homework. When the teacher asked who had not done the homework assigned, he raised his hand. Along with a few others, Samuel was made to stand outside the class the whole hour. This was the first time that he was being punished and Samuel felt very bad. He decided that he would not speak the truth in such cases.

Later that night when he was reading Gandhiji’s autobiography he read about how Gandhiji once lied to his father and felt guilty about it later on. He felt sad that Gandhiji’s father was upset with him for saying just one lie. He immediately remembered the decision he had taken in school. After all, the teacher had punished him because he did not do what he was supposed to do. Samuel decided that it was always better to say the truth in the long run. He would never think of saying a lie even if it meant getting upset for a while.
