Dams are some structures made by humans on rivers and other water bodies to store water and use it further and futue uses like irrigation,tourism,fishing,producing electricity etc... It on the a long time is beneficial but making it takes more money and many other consequences.Large dams have forced some 40-80 million people from their lands in the past six decades. Indigenous, tribal, and peasant communities have been particularly hard hit. These legions of dam refugees have, in the great majority of cases, been economically, culturally and psychologically devastated. Millions of people depend on dams to help provide the right amount of water in the right place at the right time.But if you take it as a whole dams are very much essential in the modern world

     Dams are constructed mainly for the purpose of supplying water to agricultural lands through out the year.  When there re no dams  dams, water in rivers flows continuously in to the oceans and during winter and summer there will not be enough water for irrigation or for drinking.

 

      Entire population of villages is benefited.  Civilization continues to live and flourish around the areas due to dams.  Dams enable storage of water and allow controlled release of water downstream.   So villages are protected from submerging during floods to a good extent.   However, there is a risk that if there is more inflow of water than the reservoir can hold, the surrounding areas can drown.  That would not be the case if there is no dam. 

 

      Due to construction of dams perhaps a thousand villages, have to vacate their lands and move away from near the dam to relocate elsewhere.  The wild life – animals, fauna, flora and forests, around there is affected.  Often dams are expensive and take decades to complete due to conflicts among local leaders and population.  The benefits and problems faced by upstream people and those faced by downstream people often are conflicting.    Hence,  Construction of dams has not been an easy task for governments so far.  There are many dams pending construction and stopped in the middle.

 

     Sedimentation is another problem.  Salt accumulates due to dams and irrigation water contains more salt.  That has some impact on crops and lands.

 

      Lakhs of farmers eagerly await release of water from the canals on either side of dams every season.  Many regions which could not be irrigated due to lack of water, turn into fertile lands.   Many people also have found business and employment in aquaculture activities.

 

     The people benefit a lot if there is a hydro-electricity generation project along with the dam.  This energy is pollution free, renewable, cheaper and safe.  Beautiful parks and botanical gardens are constructed and maintained around the dams.  The dams and surrounding areas are turned in to tourist spots.  So many people visit during rainy season and throughout the year. 

 

    Dams are a risk due to seismic activities and earthquakes.  It is difficult to trust the perfectness in construction.  Many people don’t want to live in surrounding areas. Tribal people have a reason to worry.

  

    Whatever the case is, dams are very important in India’s agricultural scenario and have a great role to play in the economic development of India.  Millions of people are affected by each dam in India.
