It was the month of January of the year 2003. I got up before dawn and quickly dressed up to reach the New Delhi railway station. I took the Shatabdi Express from Delhi for Agra at 6:15 a.m. The journey was quite interesting. In the train I met a newly-married couple on the train. They had married a month ago and were going to Himachal Pradesh to spent their winter vacation. We talked about the various popular tourist attractions in Himachal Pradesh like Shimla, Kullu, Manali, Dalhousie, Dharamshala.

In the afternoon the train reached Agra and got off the train. I said the married couple bye and entered the once-grand city. The first few things that attracted me in this grand city were the twisted narrow lane, dense traffic with lot of vehicles running on the road like rickshaws, cars and people. These overcrowded roads were lined with many shops. Most of the vendors were selling religious artifacts, plastic toys, spices, sweets e.t.c.

I left my luggage at a hotel and went straight to visit the Taj Mahal. It was made up of entirely white marble. It had a magical quality that attracted everyone. Its colour changed with the varying of light and shadow. The white marble was studded with gemstones from inside. On the full moon light the reflection of the Taj Mahal in the pond attracted the school children and other tourists, There were many tourist guides who told many interesting things about the Tajmahal.

Travelogue

Agra has always been my dream destination. It is the place I have always cherished to go.

I finally made it this winter. I set on a train towards Delhi from Howrah. The Kalka Mail is the best option as the time is very convenient for journey.

It took about twenty hours. The journey was quite exciting as there was so much to see out of the railway carriage and loads to eat.  When I boarded off at the Agra Station I immediately headed for the hotel booked over the net.

It was a fabulous Government run hotel at a stone's throw distance from the Taj Mahal. A peacock park adorned its premises.  After freshening I set out for my dream destination.

It was almost the time of sunset.  There was the wonder of the world dazzling in glory and majesticity.  Tourists were hustling and bustling all over the place .

I slowly approached the Taj drinking in all its beauty.  The nearer I got the grandeur it looked.  As I climbed up its stairs life came to a standstill.

Was I on Earth or in Heaven!  I saw the beautiful marble carvings, the scientifically created Miners, the exquisite marble work.

When I went down to the tomb of Shah Jahan I thanked the Almighty for having him create such a magnificent work of art and architecture.  I came up and sat in the garden enjoying the reflection of the Taj in the waters.

It was the best time of our lives.  I waited for the evening. I had calculated the day and come. It was a full moon night when the Taj was at its best.

As the moon rose so did my admiration. There was the most beautiful wonder of the world. It was all the money and the wait I had invested to see it.

I came home with my heart filled with content. Next day I took a sight seeing trip round Agra.  There were many historical places to see such as the Agra Fort, the tomb of Salim Chisti at Fatehpur Sikri, the Buland Darwaza, the Mussaman Burgh.

Shopping was also a treat in Agra. There were so many marble handicrafts, beautiful show pieces, bronze artifacts.  The good was also awesome comprising of the Mutual cuisine.  Thus the trip to Agra was not only my most memorable but the journey of my dreams.
