TS: Imagine that you are the head of a farmers' union from a drought-prone region with a long record of poor harvest and declining agricultural production. You have seen a number of farmers perish and many others migrate to urban areas in search of new means of livelihood and survival. Write a letter to the Agriculture Minister describing the kind of support you have been getting from the local authorities, why it has failed to improve the situation, and what measures you think could make the lives of the farmers in your region better.

Explanation:
Drought has direct and negative impacts agricultural production. Severe droughts in rainfed areas have reduced agricultural production by 20 to 40 per cent. It is no wonder then that farmers in rainfed areas are abandoning farming as a livelihood source (see 'Farmers have decreased, farm labourers have increased' ).
