The twinkling of stars is due to atmospheric refraction of the starlight the starlight on entering the earth atmosphere undergoes the refraction continuously before it reaches the earth atmospheric refraction occur in the medium of gradually changing refractive index.Since the atmosphere bends starlight towards the normal the apparent position of the star is slightly different from the actual position

Star light enters earth surface due to atmospheric refraction there is a change in temperature and bending of light there is more refraction and star look dim and twinkling of star happen.#$10
