Two asteroids crashed. The crash caused both asteroids to change speed. Scientists want to use the change in speed and motion to figure out which asteroid has more mass. Based on the information in the diagram, which statement is correct? In your answer, explain what the forces were like and why the asteroids changed their motion.

Answer:

Understand that the solar system consists of planets, moons, asteroids, meteoroids, comets, and the Sun. Understand that objects have mass. ... Understand that an unbalanced force causes changes in an object's speed and/or direction.

The forces were collision forces and the asteroids changed their motion due to the exchange of energy between them.

About the forces-

  1. In physics, collision means the phenomenon where two or more bodies exert forces on each other or exchange their energies in a very short time.
  2. There are three types of collision forces- elastic, inelastic, and completely inelastic.
  • Elastic Collision- In this type of collision the net kinetic energy of the system remains the same before and after the collision has taken place.
  • Inelastic Collision- In such a type of collision, there is a loss of kinetic energy, and the final and initial kinetic energies are different.

Change in Motion-

According to Newton's third law of motion, each body exerts an equal and opposite force on the other body.

Hence, the two asteroids exchange and alter their rate of motion after collisions.
