Two astronauts are in the same circular orbit of radius R around the Earth, 180o apart. Astronaut A has two cheese sandwiches, while Astronaut B has none. How can A throw a cheese sandwich to B? In terms of the astronaut’s period of rotation about the Earth, how long does it take the sandwich to arrive at B? What is the semimajor axis of the sandwich’s orbit?

Answer:

q. Shoot Tangentially in Opposite direction at V= root GMe/r wher Me is mass of earth and distance from centre of earth is r of Sandwitch and Both Astrinauts.

Time = Root( 1/4 pi square r cube / GM) because its QUARTER rotation to cover the distance. ORBITAL VELOCITY IS FIXED FOR ANY BODY HAVING MASS SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER THAN EARTH

Semi Major Axis is Ofcourse 'r' and I have assumed Circular orbit.

Note :

Shooting a sandwich is like an explosion which will indeed change the Orbit ( hence velocity ) A. as soon as he shoots the sandwitch in any ither direction except tangential opposite at OV.

p.s: hope its NOT 2 corned beef sandwiches though !!
