Given data : Two balls A and B of masses 40 g and 50 g are moving at speeds of 40 m/s and 30 m/s respectively.

To find : if after colliding, B stars moving with a velocity of 25 m/s, what is the velocity of A ?

Now,

  • Mass of ball A ( m1 ) = 40 g
  • Mass of ball B (m2) = 50 g
  • initial velocity of ball A (u1) = 40 m)s
  • initial velocity of ball B (u2) = 30 m/s
  • final velocity of ball B (v2) = 25 m/s
  • final velocity of ball A (v1) = ?

Solution : Let, final velocity of ball A (v1) be x

Now, according to the law of conservation of momentum.

⟹ m1 * u1 + m2 * u2 = m1 * v1 + m2 * v2

⟹ 40 * 40 + 50 * 30 = 40 * x + 50 * 25

⟹ 1600 + 1500 = 40x + 1250

⟹ 3100 = 40x + 1250

⟹ 3100 - 1250 = 40x

⟹ 1850 = 40x

⟹ x = 1850/40

⟹ x = 185/4

⟹ x = 46.25 m/s

Answer : The final velocity of the ball A is 46.26 m/s.
