Two balls weighing 200 gm and 300
gm each, moving towards each other
at the speed of 2 m/sec and 7 m/sec
respectively, collide head on.
Calculate the decrease in K.E. if they
move together after the collision.

Answer:

Ball 1,

Mass = 200 g

Velocity = 2 m/s

K.E. = 0.5*m*v*v

= [0.5*200*2*2] J

= 400 J

Ball 2,

Mass = 300 g

Velocity = 7 m/s

K.E. = 0.5*m*v*v

= [0.5*300*7*7] J

= 7350 J

Difference in K.E. = [7350-400] J

= 6950 J

Now,

For Ball 1,

It will go backwards with a Kinetic Energy of (7350-400) J

= 6950 J

For Ball 2,

It will go forward with a decreased Kinetic Energy of (7350-400) J

= 6950 J

Hope this helps.
