Given info : Two blocks of 100N (A) and 50N (B) are connected by a flexible but inextensible string as shown in figure. Assuming coefficient of friction between block 100N and horizontal surface is 0.25.

To find : the acceleration of masses and tension in the string are ...

solution : draw free body diagram,

let acceleration of the masses is a and tension in the string is T.

for block A,

T - fr = Ma

⇒T - μMg = Ma

⇒T - 0.25 × 100 N = 10kg × a [ assuming g = 10 m/s² ]

⇒T - 25 = 10a ...(1)

for block B

mg - T = ma

⇒50N - T = 5kg × a

⇒50 - T = 5a ...(2)

from equations (1) and (2) we get,

25 = 15a

⇒a = 5/3 m/s²

and T = 10 × 5/3 + 25 = 50/3 + 25 = 125/3 N

Therefore the acceleration of masses and tension in the string are 5/3 m/s² and 125/3 N respectively.
