Two blocks of masses 5 kg and 3 kg are attached to the
ends of a string passing over a smooth pulley fixed to the
ceiling of an elevator. A man inside the elevator accelerated
upwards, finds the acceleration of the blocks to be 9/32g.

Given :-

Mass of first block ={m}_{A} = 3 kg

Mass of second block ={m}_{B}= 5 kg

Acceleration of block = {a}_{r}= 9g/32

As the lift is moving upward then we will use,

R = m(g+a)

{R}_{1} = 3(g+a) -----(1)

{R}_{2} = 5(g+a) -----(2)

{F}_{net} = M{a}_{r}

{R}_{2}-{R}_{1} = (5+3)(9g/32)

5(g+a) - 3(g+a) = 8(9g/32)

2(g+a) = 90/4

10 + a = 45/4

a = 45/4 - 10

a = 5/4

Multiplying and Dividing by (2)

a = 5/4 × 2/2

a = g/8

Hence,

Acceleration of the elevator = a = g/8.
