Two bodies of masses 2 kg and 4 kg are connected to the ends of a string of negligible mass and then passed around a frictionless pulley. Calculate (i) the acceleration of the system and (ii) the tension in the string. (Take g = 10m/s²)

Answer:

1) 10/3 m/s²

2) 26.7 N

Explanation:

Given in the question,

mass, m1 of first body = 2kg

mass, m2 of second body = 4kg

Suppose tension is T

               acceleration is a

Formula to use

F = ma

So,

First Equation

T - m1g = m1a

T = m1a + m1g

Second Equation

m2g - T = m2a

Solving equation simultaneously

m2g - m1a - m1g = m2a

Plug value of m1 and m2 in the equation and we know that g = 10m/s²

4(10) - 2a - 2(10) = 4(a)

20 - 2a = 4a

20 = 4a + 2a

20= 6a

a = 10/3 m/s²

Put value of a in equation 1

T = 2(10/3) + 2(10)

  = 26.7 N
