Let x = length of the shorter candle

y = length of the longer candle

After 3 hours, length left of the

shorter = x - 3x/11 and of the

longer = y - 3y/7

As these lengths are equal,

x - 3x/11 = y - 3y/7

or 8x/11 = 4y/7

or x/y = (4/7) x (11/8) = 11/14

so ratio of lengths of the shorter candle to the longer candle = 11 : 14.
